Sunscreen Smarts For Healthy Skin

Sunny days bring visions of fun, carefree attitudes, sundresses, sandals, the beach, and bare feet. Sounds amazing! I can already picture myself lounging by the pool in Palm Springs, fruity drink in hand. Unfortunately, as we all know, the sun can also be very damaging to our skin. Rather than covering up and hiding inside when the sun is shining bright, go out and play. Just keep these sunscreen-smart tidbits in mind to help keep your complexion (and the rest of your gorgeous body) safe and looking great while you catch some rays.

Sun Smart Tip: While we usually think of protecting our skin when it’s hot outside, the sun can actually be much more harmful when we are in the snow. Snow reflects up to 80 percent of harmful rays; Significantly more than when we are in water or on the sand.

Wear sunscreen. Everyday.

Seriously, even when it’s cloudy or raining. Though you can’t always see them, the sun’s rays still get through to your skin when you’re outside during the day. Even through your car window when you’re driving. Obviously be more diligent when it’s extra sunny outside, but also apply some protection every day to keep your skin looking It’s best. Applying sunscreen is the number one thing you can do to keep your skin looking flawless and fierce.

So, what exactly does sunscreen do for my skin?

Wrinkles, wrinkles, wrinkles… In that it helps prevent them. Up to 90 percent of fine lines and wrinkles are caused by sun exposure.

Aside from bringing about unwanted wrinkles, the sun also dries out your skin by depleting your natural supply of hydrators, called Ceramides. Wearing sunscreen therefore helps keep your skin hydrated and supple-looking. Now that sounds much better than itchy, dry skin, right?

Surprise, surprise… Another valuable skin asset, collagen, is also damaged by the sun. When this happens, your complexion looks more red, blotchy and uneven. This is because the blood vessels underneath the skin’s surface become more noticeable as our collagen is damaged.

I have quite a bit of skin cancer in my family history, so sunscreen has been an important party of my arsenal for a long time. Aside from keeping skin looking pretty, sunscreen also helps protect us from skin diseases that are becoming more and more common. Protect yourself for this reason, if for no other.

Fortunately, many cosmetics now come with added sun protection. A foundation with spf should be fine for Winter months, but it is not enough the rest of the year (yes, even in the fall), as you would have to apply a lot of foundation in order to properly protect your skin. A tablespoon of sunscreen is the recommended amount, so apply it under your makeup for the best protection.
